Training programme on “Homestead Gardening for Enhancement of Nutritional Security among Farm Women”

As a part of 'Azadi Ka Amrut Mohastava', ICAR-Central Institute for Women in Agriculture organized a training programme on “Homestead Gardening for Enhancement of Nutritional Security among Farm Women” on 23rd September, 2021 in collaboration with Community Radio (Radio Kisan), Balipatna during the auspicious occasion of 'Poshan Batika Maah Abhiyan' in Majhihara village of Balipatna block under Khordha district. Shri Tarun Kumar Chhotray, the Agriculture Officer, Balipatna block graced the occasion as the Chief Guest of the event and highlighted about the importance of nutrition for good health and all round development of farm women. Dr Sabita Mishra Principal Scientist and Dr L.P.Sahoo, Senior Scientist of the Institute sensitized the farm women regarding significance of Azadi Ka Amrut Mohastava in the eve of 75 years of independence of India and magnitude of balanced food to achieve nutritional security by the farm families. The farm women were advised to develop homestead nutritional gardens with seasonal vegetables, green leaves, lemon, drumstick, papaya, guava, etc. Created awareness to develop poultry units, mushroom cultivation, and bee keeping units in their backyard for easy availability of nutrients. Various queries of farm women were also solved through Farmwomen–Scientists'-Interaction. About 70 farm women had participated in the programme. As critical inputs, the winter vegetable seeds (tomato,bean,amaranthus,spinach, raddish, corrender, brinjal) and some women friendly small farm tools were distributed among the farm women to grow in coming winter. The programme was enclosed by Community Radio (Radio Kisan), TV and local news papers and coordinated by Dr Sabita Mishra , Dr L.P. Sahoo, Dr. D.N. Sarangi and Shri B.C. Behera of the institute.
