Pro-active gender sensitive ICT strategy is imperative to build the capacities of the women in agriculture and to improve their livelihoods. Considering the importance of ICT for women, DRWA had taken up a network project on 'Development of Expert System for Crop and Animal Enterprises' with ZPD - VIII, Bangalore, TANUVAS, Chennai and TNAU, Coimbatore. The aim of the project was to develop expert system for Paddy, Sugarcane, Banana, Ragi, Coconut and Animal Husbandry. The expert system has been developed in Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada languages besides English. The system is comprehensive, image-based, user-friendly and advisory in nature which makes it accessible to even functionally literate farmers. Apart from crop management practices, the system provides information on post harvest aspect, marketing channel and promotional government schemes.
